Tried to use to set speed of single cylinder engine after rebuilding the carburetor. the ignition was magneto. Could not obtain reading of RPM that was believable. I believe the problem is a lack of shielding that allows noise form the ignition to give false readings . Tried same measurement on twin cylinder engine with same results. Tried next on 6 cylinder Jeep with distributor ignition. Readings were close to tach/dwell but not stable. Engine running steady, but this instrument was indicating 50 to100 variations..
